Also Melody Beattie's books on codependency are an excellent resource for those who feel compelled to "help" people with to their own detriment. I recommend starting with her classic Codependent No More, but she has a more recent book out called The New Codependency that supplements her original information based on the changes in our culture as far as awareness of codependency and the backlash against the term in some circles. For me, her books helped me understand huge chunks of my life. You might find them useful, too.
